Tips for passing the Microsoft Cybersecurity Architect exam (SC-100)

Just a short while ago, I added Microsoft Certified: Cybersecurity Architect Expert to my roster of credentials after passing the SC-100 exam. This particular exam had long been on my list, since it sits at the architectural end of Microsoft’s security certification portfolio and, as I found out, is also one of its toughest.
Although I consider my knowledge of Azure and Microsoft 365 services both deep and broad, I have to admit that this exam was quite challenging. This was not helped by my computer surprising me with a charming blue screen, not once but twice during the session. I therefore thought I would put together a short write-up in the hope that others might have an easier time as a result.

What is the Microsoft Certified: Cybersecurity Architect certification?
The Cybersecurity Architect Expert is Microsoft’s expert-level certification for designing security architectures across its cloud ecosystem, including Azure and Microsoft 365.
It validates your ability to translate business needs and risk requirements into coherent, end-to-end security architectures aligned with Zero Trust principles. This includes identity, infrastructure, applications, data, devices, networks, security operations and governance.
The emphasis is not simply on implementing individual technologies. You are expected to evaluate architectural trade-offs, identify the security implications of business decisions and select solutions that work together across organisational and technical boundaries.
The SC-100 exam covers four main areas:
1. Design solutions that align with security best practices and priorities (20–25%)
Design strategies that improve an organisation’s security posture and apply Microsoft security frameworks, architectural guidance and established best practices.
2. Design security operations, identity, and compliance capabilities (25–30%)
Design security operations processes, identity and access architectures, governance controls and compliance capabilities.
3. Design security solutions for infrastructure (25–30%)
Design security for hybrid and multicloud infrastructure, networks, endpoints, workloads and supporting platforms.
4. Design security solutions for applications and data (20–25%)
Design security for applications, APIs, DevOps processes, data platforms and the information they process.
The certification is aimed primarily at experienced cybersecurity professionals, but it is also valuable for cloud solution architects, enterprise architects and DevSecOps engineers.
Preparing for it forces you to think about security comprehensively and to recognise the often invisible seams between cloud services and architectural layers. Identity, networking, infrastructure, applications, storage, data and security operations may be presented as separate technologies, but architectural weaknesses frequently appear where these areas meet.
Prerequisites
Passing SC-100 alone does not award the certification. To earn the Microsoft Certified: Cybersecurity Architect Expert badge, you must also hold at least one of the following active associate-level certifications:
- Microsoft Certified: Identity and Access Administrator Associate
- Microsoft Certified: Security Operations Analyst Associate
- Microsoft Certified: Azure Security Engineer Associate
The precise composition of the exam can vary, but you should expect approximately 40 to 60 questions in several formats. These may include multiple-choice, scenario-based, drag-and-drop, build-list and case-study questions.
You may also encounter problem-and-solution question sets in which the underlying scenario remains the same while the proposed solution changes. Once you submit an answer in this section, you generally cannot return to the previous question, so you have only one attempt at each.
At present, Microsoft allocates 100 minutes of exam time to associate- and expert-level role-based exams without labs. The duration shown during registration remains the authoritative figure for your particular appointment.
Unscheduled breaks are permitted, although the exam clock continues running and you cannot return to questions you viewed before starting the break. I did not make use of this feature, at least not voluntarily.
The exam interface also provides access to Microsoft Learn documentation. This may initially seem like a blessing, and it certainly can help, but for most questions it is only tangentially useful. The questions often depend on architectural judgement or details scattered across several products, rather than facts that can be retrieved from a single article.
How should I prepare?
Before I attempted the exam, I tried to find some helpful advice and while I found some blog posts and forum threads, none were quite as helpful as I had hoped. So here is what I wish I’d known beforehand: Ideally, your preparation should combine three different approaches, tailored according to your already existing knowledge and practical experience:
1. Build broad conceptual knowledge
You need a high-level understanding of the Microsoft security ecosystem, including Azure, Microsoft Sentinel, Microsoft Defender, Microsoft Purview, Microsoft Priva, Microsoft Entra and Microsoft 365.
For each product or service, you should understand:
- its security-related capabilities
- the problems it is intended to solve
- how it integrates with other Microsoft services
- which licensing, deployment or architectural prerequisites apply
- how its role changes across cloud-only, hybrid and multicloud environments
Hybrid scenarios are particularly important. You should understand, for example, the different ways of extending on-premises Active Directory into Microsoft Entra ID, which identity capabilities are available in different configurations, and which Microsoft Defender features support AWS or other non-Azure workloads.
You should also be familiar with Microsoft’s principal security frameworks and architectural guidance, including the Microsoft Cybersecurity Reference Architectures, the Cloud Adoption Framework, the Azure Well-Architected Framework and the Rapid Modernization Plan.
There are dedicated learning paths for each of the four exam domains on the official Microsoft Learn page. They are useful and comprehensive, but also time-consuming.
I used the learning paths to explore topics I felt less confident about in greater depth, while relying on several Udemy courses for the bulk of my preparation, as I generally prefer video-based instruction.
I would also highly recommend John Savill’s SC-100 Study Cram video as an initial entry point. It provides a clear and condensed overview of the exam domains and, more importantly, shows how the different topics relate to one another.
2. Gain practical familiarity
SC-100 covers a very wide range of services and capabilities. You should ideally have hands-on experience with as many of them as possible.
You do not need to be an expert operator of every product, but you should at least understand what the principal portals look like, where major controls are configured and how the services are positioned relative to one another.
My recommendation is to create a sandbox or playground environment and configure a representative selection of services, particularly:
- Microsoft Entra ID
- Azure Policy
- Microsoft Defender for Cloud
- Microsoft Defender XDR
- Microsoft Sentinel
- Microsoft Purview
- Microsoft Priva
- relevant Microsoft 365 security and compliance features
Trial subscriptions and limited free offers can make some of this possible without maintaining a permanent enterprise environment, although availability and licensing conditions change regularly.
Once you have actually used these services, it becomes considerably easier to distinguish between tools whose names, portals and capabilities may otherwise blur together.
Microsoft also provides a collection of SC-100 lab exercises that can help you become more familiar with the relevant technologies.
3. Case studies
Many online courses provide case studies resembling those found in the exam and there is an official list on Microsoft Learning as well. You can also construct your own or use an AI tool to generate practice scenarios.
The exact content of the case study matters less than the reasoning it forces you to practise.
Specifically, you need to learn how to:
- separate relevant requirements from contextual noise
- map business requirements to technical controls
- recognise conflicts between stated requirements
- identify architectural dependencies and constraints
- select the solution that satisfies the complete requirement with the least unnecessary complexity
For example, a reference architecture might recommend Microsoft-managed keys as the default approach, while the customer explicitly requires control over its own encryption keys. That single requirement excludes the default recommendation and directs you towards a customer-managed key design.
This is the kind of reasoning the exam expects. Memorising isolated product features is not enough.
Finally, I recommend taking Microsoft’s free practice assessment.
It gives you a feel for the questions you may encounter and identifies the areas in which you are already strong or still require further preparation. Consistently scoring above 80% is a useful positive signal, but it should not be treated as a guarantee that you are ready for the real exam.
What is the best exam strategy?
- Take three deep breaths before you start. There is a great deal of information to process, and rushing the first few questions gains you very little.
- Read every question carefully. I encountered a few “gotcha” questions where the wording initially seemed to demand knowledge of an oddly specific feature or configuration. In reality, the answer could sometimes be derived from a core security principle. For example, a question about configuring a Conditional Access policy ultimately came down to the Zero Trust principle of verifying explicitly and avoiding broad or blanket exclusions
- Use your time deliberately and trust your judgement. I am a strong believer in answering a question decisively and avoiding unnecessary second-guessing. Your instincts will often be right, and progressing steadily also gives you a clearer sense of how much time you have left. Only flag and skip a question if you really have no idea
- Use Microsoft Learn sparingly. It proved very tempting to try to quickly read through the documentation of a particular technology or service, but doing so can quickly leave you pressed for time. Don’t try to gain absolute confidence for each answer by checking against the documentation, use it only where you are really unsure and when the question allows. Consider whether the feature or configuration in question is likely to be covered by an existing article. If not, it is probably not worth spending your remaining time searching for it
- Think like an architect. Do not merely look for a technically valid answer. Look for the solution that addresses the complete requirement, while still respecting constraints such as cost, administrative effort, existing architecture and the principle of least privilege
The SC-100 exam is demanding because it tests breadth, depth and architectural reasoning at the same time. Even substantial experience with Azure or Microsoft 365 does not remove the need to understand how the wider Microsoft security ecosystem fits together.
